Brown University’s 15-story brutalist tower–known as the Sciences Library and built in 1971–served to integrate the Biological and Physical Science’s libraries within one space. With eleven of the fifteen floors dedicated to stacks, the University sought to create a more flexible, community-centered space with the conversion of three floors into new program spaces including the Sheridan Center Innovation Lab, Social Sciences Lab and Language Center.

The re-purposing of the library included demolition and abatement, interior fit-out, swipe card access doors, new bathrooms and updated mechanical distribution on floors five through nine. Additionally, an audio booth and video studio required special acoustic treatment to minimize sounds reflection in the building. The project schedule was being phased to limit disturbances to the occupied library.

Designed by renowned American architect Philip Johnson and opened in 1972, the Johnson Building is considered an iconic modern building that has been designated a Boston Landmark. The improvements for the Johnson Building included realizing the goals of the BPL’s strategic plan with new program areas, improving access to the historic McKim Building and stronger street-level connections to the City. The renovations also addressed building systems upgrades and required scope to meet current codes.

Understanding the importance of the Johnson Building to the community and its service to the 25 City branch libraries, the facility remained open and operational throughout construction. All work was carefully phased to minimize impacts, with the majority of disruptive work performed on off-hours shifts. The revitalized library features a welcoming front lobby and updated program areas including a children’s library, teen area and a reader-friendly collection on the second floor. The granite façade was transformed with the installation of a glass curtain wall façade system to create a stunning front door to the community.

The City of Cambridge had long been searching for a way to expand the footprint of their Public Library, but believed their options were limited given the need to preserve the character of the original 1889 Van Brunt & Howe building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A new addition—with an ultra-modern design that complements the traditional Romanesque architecture of the existing library—turned out to be the perfect solution.

The main building received a complete interior and exterior restoration, repairing and revitalizing the original millwork, windows and Dedham granite façade with authentic period materials and techniques. All M/E/P systems were upgraded and structural bracing ensured preservation of the building’s structural systems. The 76,600 sq. ft. addition features a striking double-skin glass curtain wall imported from Germany, distinctive interior finishes such as bamboo flooring and terrazzo tile and a 33,000 sq. ft. underground parking garage. Features of the library now include 90 computer stations, reservable meeting rooms, 220-seat auditorium, state-of-the-art climate-controlled rooms, computer training center and a children’s room. Elements such as a green roof to cover the parking garage, and the restored Joan Lorentz Park, contributed to this project to receiving LEED Silver certification.

Woburn’s Public Library—known as the Winn Memorial Library—is a H.H. Richardson-designed Romanesque Revival building that has served the City since 1879. Decades of New England weather had taken a toll on the sandstone façade and tile roof, resulting in water intrusion and damage to the interior. Additionally, the space was dated and no longer met the modern demands of library patrons. As a result, the library underwent both preservation and modernization to restore the building to its original glory and revive the cultural experience of Woburn Center.

The first phase of the project included preservation of the façade, roof and interior woodwork, including the installation of new windows and skylights. The interior was reconfigured, requiring structural changes, floor lowering and associated underpinning. The second phase added a 15,000 sq. ft. modern structure to house an administration suite, children’s room entrance, first floor circulation area and a new stairway orientation. Additional updates included a redesigned walkway, changes to the east entry, a plaza, glass framing on the original building, seating areas and a children’s garden. All work was carefully managed around sensitive abutting neighbors, including a senior living facility, courthouse, businesses and residences.

From modest beginnings in 1886 as a small collection of books once housed in a building that doubled as the post office, Cold Spring Harbor Library and Environmental Center is now a robust, community-centric information hub situated on five acres of the Cold Spring Harbor State Park.

Taking full advantage of its waterfront, hillside location, the Library was cut into the side of the hill, with reading rooms and public spaces strategically overlooking the harbor. Building the Library involved extensive amounts of site work due to the property’s sloped grade and retaining wall.

With its high-end interior and exterior finishes, today, Cold Spring Harbor Library and Environmental Center is considered a unique collection of quiet places and beautiful spaces—from the main reading room with the cozy, stone fireplace to the large, wraparound outdoor porch.

The new Lamond-Riggs Library is a critical part of the DC Public Library’s (DCPL) “Know Your Neighborhood” strategic plan, which aims to significantly increase membership and attendance to its library facilities. The library actively sought input through meetings, surveys, focus groups and online feedback, which drove key design decisions early in conceptual design. The design reflects the community’s goals to create a welcoming place of learning, technology, and community. The new building houses a range of flexible spaces, collaboration spaces, meeting areas, and seating areas for all ages.

The construction of the new Library consisted of 23,000 sq. ft. over two levels. Major features of the building include the exterior patio section on the ground level and balcony on the second level. The Library design allows for plenty of natural light entering the building, partially shaded by a custom panelized screen wall along South Dakota Avenue. A 3,000 sq. ft. interim library was built for use between the demolition of the old Library and construction of the new.

The goal to create a vibrant new consolidated center for the Department of Anthropology required a bold scheme to repurpose and expand the existing Tozzer Library, designed by Johnson and Hodvelt in 1973. The lower two floors continue to house the Tozzer Library, while the upper floors are dedicated to the Social Anthropology program along with faculty offices, administrative support spaces, classrooms, project rooms and collaborative meeting spaces. In keeping with Harvard’s campus-wide sustainability initiatives, the project was designed for LEED-NC Gold certification.

The expanded building, located in a high-profile site adjacent to occupied Harvard buildings, required an advanced level of logistics, safety and mitigation planning to minimize campus impacts. The complex scope of work included the gut renovation of the interior, the reskinning of the façade and the integration of a two-floor vertical addition providing 10,000 sq. ft. of additional program spaces. The project also involved the installation of all new building systems, including a chilled beam system.

Oliver Wendell Holmes Library (OWHL) sits in the heart of Phillips Academy’s picturesque campus and serves over 1,100 students in grades 9-12. OWHL was originally built in 1929 and currently houses over 90,000 books; archival collections; a variety of student learning and common spaces; and a basement-level makerspace with 3D printers, sewing machines, a laser cutter and vinyl cutter.

To modernize the historic library and increase collaboration areas, the OWHL underwent a gut renovation and structural reconfiguration through the central core of the building—a complex task due to the varied ages of the building’s additions. Following the demolition of the five-level book stack core, new M/E/P systems and natural light were integrated, building accessibility issues were addressed and an open floorplan was created. The resulting space provides increased classroom and group study areas; an expanded makerspace; a new café; more student seating; office and teaching space for the Tang Institute; a climate-controlled archive room; and features updated finishes throughout. Historic interior elements including the Travis Mural and substantial quantities of millwork in the Garver Room, Dole Room and Freeman Room required removal, preservation and re-installation efforts to ensure these finishes were not compromised during construction.
