With a generous gift from alumnus Stanley Manne ‘52, the Bronx High School of Science built an 11,000 sq. ft., 72-seat, two-story, new state-of-the-art research facility with a focus on life sciences. The building provides college level laboratory facilities for advanced students to carry out long-term personal research projects under the direction of a faculty advisor, representing the most transformative improvement in the school’s history. The institute features three multidisciplinary labs and a full complement of auxiliary spaces: a cold room, tissue culture room, microscopy room, sterilization room, animal room and more. The new labs enable students to conduct independent scientific research with cutting-edge equipment and materials in sophisticated, versatile spaces for their research. Students will have the freedom to envision, design, execute, analyze and report on projects. The students can run experiments, continuously allowing them to undertake more complex research questions.

Brooke Charter Schools’ mission is to provide academically rigorous public education to Boston-area students. The new 94,000 sq. ft. Brooke Charter High School builds on that mission by providing a state-of-the-art learning environment for one of Boston’s most underprivileged neighborhoods. The site adjacent to the existing high school was chosen for the new building—which contained significant amounts of contaminated soils and ledge that needed to be removed. Due to of its close proximity to the school and dense urban neighborhood, our team was heavily engaged in community outreach and mitigation measures throughout the project.

The new Brooke Charter High School supports 840 students in grades 8-12 and features classrooms, a dining commons, study rooms, a gymnasium, auditorium, music and art rooms and administrative staff offices. The school was built to LEED for Schools Silver standards.

Attleboro High School is one of 14 comprehensive high schools in Massachusetts that offers both traditional grade 9-12 high school as well as a chapter 74-approved vocational/technical high school. It serves students with both college preparatory and Career and Technical Education (CTE) curriculum. The existing high school building was built in 1961 and could no longer support the instructional and programmatic needs for 21st century education.

Construction of the new four-story school for 1,725 students was conducted directly adjacent to the existing high school and football stadium, surrounded by a residential neighborhood, elementary school and middle school. The existing high school remained open and occupied during construction and was ultimately demolished upon completion. The site of the existing school provided space for new parking lots and athletic fields. Major reconfiguration to vehicular and pedestrian infrastructure included construction of a new rotary, which required the relocation of utilities that served the existing high school and adjacent residences. Complex site and foundation work required dewatering and support of excavation with piles and lagging.

The new school building offers 19 CTE programs, including robotics, culinary arts, cosmetology, horticultural studies and visual arts. Shared spaces, such as the cafeteria, gymnasium and auditorium, link the building together in the center to provide a commons space for student and public gatherings. The main lobby connects the front public entrance to the rear student entrance with a 40-foot curtain wall system.

Originally built in 1933 and last renovated in 1978, the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS) is an icon in the City of Cambridge, but was in need of significant upgrades to continue to serve its community. After an intensive planning and fundraising effort, the City embarked on the process to revitalize CRLS for a new generation of students.

Working with the City of Cambridge and HMFH Architects, we helped outline a multi-phased, fast-track improvement plan that would provide increased program space and improved infrastructure, while incorporating enough sustainable elements to earn LEED Gold certification. The project phasing was specifically designed to maximize construction activity during school vacations and minimize impact on student life. The upgrades were spread across the campus library arts building and several classroom buildings, and included updated M/E/P systems with new rooftop units, updated fixtures and finishes and new ceilings in several of the buildings. In addition, the building received a full restoration and preservation of the exterior limestone and concrete façade.

Constructed in the 1970s, Methuen High School was originally designed with an open classroom theory. Through time, dividers were installed to separate the learning spaces utilized by more than 2,000 students in grades 9-12. Due to the initial design of the school, there were numerous deficiencies to address. Most classrooms were without access to natural light or exterior views, and, given the open classroom theory, there was virtually no separation between each. The school did not possess compliant emergency egress paths, nor was it ADA compliant. The main entry of the school was not clearly identified or secured with multiple points of entry into the building.

The project included a phased construction approach in a fully occupied 342,000 sq. ft. high school. In order to create available space within the building for construction, the 9th grade students were setup in a temporary residence at a nearby school. The project scope included selective demolition of portions of the existing building totaling 78,300 sq. ft., addition of 105,000 sq. ft. and reconstruction of the remaining 263,700 sq. ft. existing two story school. The revitalized space includes new classrooms, labs, offices and administration space, as well as limited renovations to the facility’s existing ice rink and field house. The addition, which is located where a portion of the existing building was demolished, houses a new cafeteria, media center, auditorium and fine arts educational space. The project achieved Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance Schools (MA-CHPS) standards.

After many years of success and growth, Putnam Vocational Technical Academy was in need of a larger, more modern high school to support their continued advancement of its students. The new school includes standard and special needs classrooms, food service facilities, labs and shops to serve the school’s various vocations including culinary arts, retail/marketing, automotive, cosmetology, electric/plumbing, graphic design, robotics and medical assisting.

The new Putnam Vocational Technical High School was constructed on an occupied site while students remained in the existing facility. Upon completion of the new building, students were relocated and the old school was demolished. The cleared area was re-used to create parking for the 1,600 students and faculty. Our team developed detailed, comprehensive schedules to carefully phase demolition of the existing building around the active high school campus. Self-perform capabilities were utilized for carpentry, concrete and rebar work to help accelerate the schedule.

The project received the achieved Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance Schools (MA-CHPS) award. Initiatives included incorporating superior energy performing mechanical systems, waste stream reduction (during construction), minimizing water consumption, maximizing natural light throughout the building and improving issues of indoor air quality. This project was constructed through a joint venture with the Morganti Group.

KIPP Academy, a system of national, college preparatory charter schools, selected the Boston neighborhood of Mattapan as the site for its new elementary and middle school. Site challenges included the demolition of an old factory and several residential structures, which was completed prior to the start of construction. In addition, we managed utility and drive lane upgrades to accommodate the new school and the adjacent neighborhood’s needs.

The new, four-story facility tops 53,000 sq. ft., with an attached pre-engineered gymnasium, and includes educational and administrative space for 650 students and over 80 staff members. Exterior scope included new parking; student drop-off and circulation roadways for parents and buses; and an outdoor play area. The project is targeting LEED Silver certification.
