CHELSEA, MA – Consigli Construction Co., Inc. joined Governor Charlie Baker, Secretary of Administration and Finance Michael J. Heffernan, Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders, Secretary of Veterans’ Services Francisco Ureña, House Speaker Robert DeLeo and veterans of the United States Armed Forces for the groundbreaking of the new long-term care facility at the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea, MA. The current facility will continue to be fully operational, caring for 154 veterans, during the construction process.

“The new long-term care facility at the Chelsea Soldiers’ Home will improve the quality of services and care provided to the Commonwealth’s men and women who have answered the call of duty and served our nation,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “Our veterans and their families have sacrificed so much for this country, and it is our duty to care for them with honor and dignity.”

“At Consigli, we respect the selfless commitment veterans have made in defense of our freedom, and we are proud to have many veterans on our team. It’s truly an honor and a privilege to be a partner on this transformational project that will create the highest-quality facilities to serve the dedicated members of our armed services.”

– Matthew Consigli, President, Consigli Construction Co., Inc.

The Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea first opened its doors to Massachusetts veterans in 1882. The first residents were Civil War veterans who were wounded or unable to care for themselves, many of whom had previously resided in the Commonwealth’s “alms houses.” Today, Chelsea carries on Massachusetts’ proud tradition of helping all veterans in need of both long-term care and domiciliary / supportive services. Chelsea is surveyed annually by the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs (“VA”) and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”). It is also fully accredited by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (“Joint Commission”). Chelsea has a Board of Trustees appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. The trustees and DVS share responsibility for the management of the home. Chelsea Soldiers’ Home currently has the capacity for 136 beds for long-term care.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Common Good City Farm and Consigli Construction Co., Inc. broke ground today on the final portion of a storage shed that will assist the farm in housing more seasonal produce that can be used by the community. Common Good City Farm is a non-profit urban farm and education center located on a half-acre plot in LeDroit Park. Consigli will be donating their time for this project.

The farm uses sustainable urban farming techniques and includes a vegetable garden, fruit orchard, beehives, and a composting system. In addition to being a community food source, Common Good City Farm is an outdoor learning center, offering agricultural workshops and youth education. The Farm is located on D.C. Parks and Recreation land and is part of the Department’s efforts to connect residents to their local environment.

In 2017, the Washington Architectural Foundation and Catholic University’s School of Architecture worked with a team of high-school students who helped design a storage shed for the farm so more seasonal produce could be used by the community. This project is a unique use of D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation land, that allows for people to actually improve their health through healthy food.

The first part of the shed, for dry storage, was completed last year. Work on the final portion began today.

“Our Foundation’s mission is to bring design to the community and this structure, small though it may be, shows the power of that,” said Mary Fitch, Executive Vice President of the Washington Architectural Foundation. “This project involved high school students, college students, architects and local citizens all with the common goal to support healthy food in our community.” The Foundation is partnering on this project with Consigli , KUBE Architecture and Matthew J. Daw, PE.

The facility will be a hub for STEM research, public policy development and entrepreneurship. Consigli will serve as the general contractor on the project. The complex will be the future home of University at Albany’s first-in-the-nation College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity.

“This project embodies the core priorities of our unfolding strategic plan that will ensure University at Albany’s position as a world-class research institution for years to come,” said University President, Havidan Rodriguez.

The new facility will include classroom and office space; research labs; specialty instrumentation facilities; an emergency preparedness situation room, weather research and instruction map rooms and observation facilities; business and technology transfer services offices; and conference facilities. A pedestrian path from University at Albany’s existing perimeter road as well as shuttle bus service from Uptown Campus buildings to the new building will connect ETEC to the main academic podium.

“As a company, we are aware of the vital role that New York’s colleges and universities have on the economy, in addition to furthering the advancement of emerging technologies and entrepreneurial leadership,” said Greg Burns, president of New York Operations for Consigli. “This building will aid University at Albany in this realm, as well as bolster its strategic vision as a world-class institution.”
